There is a lot of distance on this pitch, so players that make strokes have a decent chance of getting their money’s worth if they follow through and hit it. The pitch has some spin, but it still provides the most assistance to fast bowlers.
No rain is forecast on Wednesday, and the match in Stormont should go on as scheduled. Cloud cover is expected to be substantial throughout the duration of the game.
The Irish would be dissatisfied if they hadn’t won one of their previous two games. It had match-winning opportunities in both games but came up short. Last time’s abbreviated encounter favoured Afghanistan, but the fact that Ireland still put up a good fight is promising.
So far, George Dockrell (134 runs), Andrew Balbirnie (113 runs), and Lorcan Tucker (100 runs) have been Ireland’s greatest hitters (112 runs). The dismal 55 runs scored by Paul Stirling with a strike rate of 105.76 is a major letdown.
It’s safe to say that Ireland’s batting has vastly improved, and Tector still hasn’t reached his full potential. Not only are three of the top four run-scorers in the series Irish, but that’s also a good indicator.
Bowling-wise, Delany and Little have been the top scorers, but nobody else really stands out. As a collective, we believe the Irish are superior over the Afghanistani team under their home conditions, but at this time we would not risk betting on any individual Irish bowler.
Paul Stirling, Andy Balbirnie (c), Lorcan Tucker (wk), Harry Tector, Gareth Delany, Curtis Campher, George Dockrell, Mark Adair, Fionn Hand, Graham Hume, Josh Little
There has been a notable improvement in Afghanistan’s batting performance since the first two games, but there is still much work to be done. Although Rahmanullah Gurbaz showed flashes of brilliance, Najibullah Zadran has been the team’s undisputed leader. He has scored 115 runs at a strike rate of over 200 and has hit 9 sixes, more than any other player on either side.
Afghanistan may have trouble if he leaves early. Afghanistan has been saved on several occasions by people like Hashmatullah Shahidi, Rashid Khan, and Usman Ghani, but they can’t keep doing it. We continue to believe that the Afghanistan batting order is really weak.
There is a lot more parity in Afghanistan’s bowling attack. With the help of Mujeeb ur Rahman, Mohammad Nabi, and Fareed Ahmed, Naveen ul Haq has taken 7 wickets thus far in this series.
Rashid Khan has only taken two wickets and has a poor economy rate.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Hazratullah Zazai, Najibullah Zadran, Mohammad Nabi (c), Ibrahim Zadran, Azmatullah Moarzai, Rashid Khan, Naveen ul-Haq, Sharafuddin Ashraf, Fareed Ahmad, Mujeeb ur Rahman
With the series on the line, cricket fans even somewhat interested in either Ireland or Afghanistan will be riveted to this matchup. Both sides will likely try for big shots throughout their innings, leading to a high number of dismissals. We expect a close game, but Afghanistan will emerge victorious.
