We could have chased a lot more than 334 had England not bowled so poorly. Sam Curran, Matt Potts, and Adil Rashid weren’t as successful as they had hoped in their recruitment efforts. Rashid, in particular, took a lot of flak for his inability to adjust to the South African hitters’ sweeps.

For some time now, England’s bowling unit has struggled to take wickets. England’s bowlers didn’t appear to bother South Africa in the same way they did India. These bowlers aren’t worth a bet at this point.

England fared significantly better in the batting department. It had a 100-run opening combination and runs from its top three hitters, but the middle of the order fell and it could only get to 271. Ben Stokes’ retirement means England will have to find a new top-order batsman and a fast bowler. It’s not a simple process.

If David Willey were to be included in the starting eleven, they could then shift Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone, and Moeen Ali each up a spot. In our view, the batting order would appear better with that change.

Root and Buttler are the two English hitters who we feel confident in betting on in this match. We’ll wager on the ‘Over’ in the Over/Under markets for the teams’ combined runs. England had a higher amount of sixes than South Africa in the preceding match, but a lower number of fours than the South Africans.

Tabraiz Shamsi is their go-to wicket-taker in the middle overs, while Keshav Maharaj bowls the new ball and will always put up a fight against a batsman like Jason Roy. Lungi Ngidi and Anrich Nortje sped up the tempo to take out the lower order for a total of 0-1 in the first innings.
