Match Details

Match: England vs Ireland 1st ODI, Ireland tour of England ODI Series, 2023

Date: 20th September 2023

Time: 5:00 pm IST and 11:30 am GMT

Venue: Headingley Cricket Ground, Leeds, United Kingdom

Pitch report

The genuine surface that Headingley frequently provides usually helps the batters more. Like most English venues, the first few overs will also offer some assistance for seam bowlers.  The seam bowlers will be able to obtain reliable movement off the air. However, the batters may settle down and begin playing their shots once the ball softens.

Weather Report

Anticipate a day adorned with the gentle patter of rain, painting the atmosphere in a serene, misty hue. This backdrop might add an exciting twist to the cricket match, introducing an element of challenge and unpredictability for the players.

Squad Comparison for England vs Ireland

England

Several England players who participated in the series against New Zealand have been rested. This new-look England team, which also includes three uncapped players, will be coached by Zak Crawley. All three of Crawley’s career ODI appearances—three total—came against Pakistan in the Covid-19-affected series in 2021. His first time serving as England’s captain in any capacity.

The key batter to watch out for in this series will be Harry Brook, named to England’s World Cup roster. Throughout his three outings in the New Zealand series, he scored 37 runs off of 68 balls. The gifted young player has shown much promise in various formats and is keen to show that he merits a spot in the World Cup team.

The last-minute addition of Joe Root to the team for the opening ODI. Before joining the England World Cup team and leaving for India, Root, whose performance over 50 overs has dipped, will use this match to accumulate some valuable runs.

The potential of Phil Salt is also intriguing. In his 14 ODI matches thus far, the wicketkeeper-batsman has scored 460 runs at an average of 38.33 and a strike rate of 125.

Sam Hain without a hat should also be avoided. The middle-order batsman has 10 hundreds and a List-A average of nearly 58 from 62 games. He has our support and will play a significant part in this series.

There will be several fresh faces in England’s bowling as well. Along with Luke Wood, Craig Overton, and Matthew Potts, seam-bowling alternatives include Brydon Carse and George Scrimshaw. The team’s primary spinner is Rehan Ahmed. The 19-year-old leg-spinner will appreciate the chance to get some crucial experience because he is still very new to international cricket.

England Playing XI

Will Jacks, Phil Salt (wk), Joe Root, Zak Crawley (c), Ben Duckett, Sam Hain, Rehan Ahmed, Brydon Carse, Tom Hartley/George Scrimshaw, Luke Wood, Matthew Potts

Ireland

For the England series, Ireland has put up a strong team. The team’s most seasoned batter, Paul Stirling, will be their captain. Stirling has been in excellent form recently, scoring 346 runs in his last 10 games. Andrew Balbirnie will start with Stirling, according to Ireland. They hope to build the duo into a more reliable opening option for 50-over cricket because they think the two get along well.

This year, Balbirnie has participated in 13 ODIs and has scored 363 runs at an average of 36.30 and a strike rate of 73.33.

The third player in this series will be Curtis Campher. He has been a pillar of Ireland’s middle order for a while, but we think he will also contribute in this new capacity.

Another batter to watch out for is Harry Tector. The middle-order batter has been consistently exploding runs recently, averaging nearly 49 in his last 10 games.

Mark Adair and Josh Little will be Ireland’s two best bowlers. The two seam bowlers should have enough help from the surface, especially early on, and they should be able to pick up a few early wickets. In his last 10 games, Adair has taken 20 wickets at a strike rate of 24.4.

Ireland Playing XI

Paul Stirling (c), Andrew Balbirnie, Curtis Campher, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker (wk), Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Andy McBrine, Mark Adair, Josh Little, Barry McCarthy

England vs Ireland Match Prediction

In 13 ODDI matches, Ireland has just twice managed to defeat England. Given that they will be playing an English team with a fresh look, this is their most excellent chance to notch a couple more victories over their neighbors. However, England’s batting still appears to be strong even without many of their regular players. Ireland will have trouble if people like Brook, Crawley, and Salt get going. Despite this, the Irish batting lineup should be able to score high totals against this bowling lineup’s relative inexperience. Ireland should put up a good fight. The overall home advantage, though, favors England.
