Chelsea’s hopes of qualifying for Europe seem to be over as they currently occupy the 11th spot in the Premier League standings, 20 points and 11 points behind the top four teams. In order to prevent the Blues from having their worst league season in 27 years, Lampard’s top priority right now is to guide them into the top half of the standings.
Chelsea enters Wednesday’s match having already drawn a blank against Brentford this season, playing out a goalless draw away from home in October. Only four teams in the Premier League have scored fewer goals than Chelsea (30) this season, three of which are in the relegation zone. However, Chelsea has triumphed in six of their last eight home matches against the Bees, and picking up three much-needed points on Wednesday would give them a huge boost before facing the difficult task of travelling to face league leaders and London rivals Arsenal the following week.

Brentford has dropped to 10th place in the table and is now seven points behind seventh-placed Liverpool, who have a game in hand. They have lost all four of their recent top-flight games in which they have scored first, and their chances of qualifying for Europe for the first time in their history are dwindling.
However, Thomas Frank’s team is still on track to finish in the top half of the Premier League, which they can do with a victory over 11th-placed Chelsea, who are currently five points further behind. The fact that Brentford won a memorable 4-1 victory at Stamford Bridge last season gives them reason for optimism going into Wednesday’s match against Chelsea despite having won just three of their 16 away games in the top flight this season.

A goal-shy Chelsea team can ill-afford to lose any more points if they are to finish in the top half of the table, let alone maintain their tenuous hopes of securing European qualification. Brentford have conceded in nine of their last 12 away games this season. Another close game, possibly ending in a share of the spoils on Wednesday, could be in store for the two teams six months after their goalless draw in the reverse match.
Chelsea 1-0 Brentford, predicted by us.
