Venue: Old Trafford, Manchester
There is an expectation that the surface in Manchester will be a good one for batting. Recent performances by Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya have shown that a rapid pace of run scoring is possible at Old Trafford. The runners who are setting the pace are most likely to get some help, particularly with the new ball.
There is a chance of rain throughout the day, which could lead to short delays. The temperature will be around the 21-degree Celsius mark.
We could have chased a lot more than 334 had England not bowled so poorly. Sam Curran, Matt Potts, and Adil Rashid weren’t as successful as they had hoped in their recruitment efforts. Rashid, in particular, took a lot of flak for his inability to adjust to the South African hitters’ sweeps.
For some time now, England’s bowling unit has struggled to take wickets. England’s bowlers didn’t appear to bother South Africa in the same way they did India. These bowlers aren’t worth a bet at this point.
England fared significantly better in the batting department. It had a 100-run opening combination and runs from its top three hitters, but the middle of the order fell and it could only get to 271. Ben Stokes’ retirement means England will have to find a new top-order batsman and a fast bowler. It’s not a simple process.
If David Willey were to be included in the starting eleven, they could then shift Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone, and Moeen Ali each up a spot. In our view, the batting order would appear better with that change.
Root and Buttler are the two English hitters who we feel confident in betting on in this match. We’ll wager on the ‘Over’ in the Over/Under markets for the teams’ combined runs. England had a higher amount of sixes than South Africa in the preceding match, but a lower number of fours than the South Africans.
Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Sam Curran, Jos Buttler (c & wk), Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Craig Overton, David Willey, Adil Rashid, Reece Topley
In the first ODI, South Africa demonstrated the potency of their white-ball unit. There are at least 25 more runs that might have been scored if the team’s batting had been even better. Janneman Malan’s 57, Quinton de Kock’s threat, and Rassie van der Dussen’s excellent run in one-day international cricket continued.
Miller and Klaasen can play aggressively down the order now that Markram is a solid middle-of-the-order hitter. If Andile Phehlukwayo does not recover from his injury in time, Dwaine Pretorius will take his place at number 7.
The bowling of South Africa was also quite excellent. Tabraiz Shamsi is their go-to wicket-taker in the middle overs, while Keshav Maharaj bowls the new ball and will always put up a fight against a batsman like Jason Roy. Lungi Ngidi and Anrich Nortje sped up the tempo to take out the lower order for a total of 0-1 in the first innings.
Quinton de Kock/ (wk), Janneman Malan, Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo, Keshav Maharaj (c), Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Tabraiz Shamsi
After Ben Stokes’ retirement, England will be looking for other players in the middle of the lineup to step up and realise their full potential. England’s batting showing in Durham was their finest of the summer, despite their defeat. We expect a close match between England and South Africa, with the latter taking the victory.
